Success and Ideas

So far I have reached my goal and have learned many things along the way. I have developed my own way of teaching the CPR classes and have become more comfortable teaching. I have also learned how to deal with the different personalities of the kids. From the rowdy ones to the good ones. It can be very frustrating at times to teach the rowdy bunch, but I enjoy having that challenge. Evey time I finish teaching I feel rewarded to know that I have taught the kids how to safe someones life! I get very tickled when I see the kids I have taught in the hall way and they stop me and tell me that they still remember the steps. They say things like "its 30 compressions and 2 breaths; and " are you choking I know CPR can I help". It just puts a smile to my face when they say that. Since I have finished my goal I was thinking what can I do next? I know that some of the students, teachers, and parents have told me that they wanted to learn CPR. So my idea was to teach CPR during spring intensive week! I have talked to Mrs. Zion and she thinks it is a great idea! What to you all think?
I have not yet talked to Mrs. Seay about the details on this, but I certainly plan on talking to her this week!

Goal!

Today I had my last CPR class that I had to teach to reach my goal of teaching half of Oakbrook's  high school students. It was also my biggest and most classes I have taught in one day, and it was all worth it! In my first class I taught 16 students and I had a AHA instructor come and assist me. The first group of kids I had today they were not rowdy and they payed close attention. I really enjoyed this class the most. In this class a lot of the kids seem excited to learn CPR. It makes me so happy to see how eager they are to learn CPR.

Now the second class, whew! That class I would have to say is the BIGGEST class that I have ever taught. I must add that this class was the rowdiest bunch of boys. Although they could be disruptive and joke around they listened to what I and my instructors had to say to them. With the help of Mrs. Gillespie as well. In this class I had 21 students and I cannot believe that I survived. It was a really fun and interactive class though. I had two instructors helping with this class because of the size.

The last class that I taught was Mr. Burnett's PE class. Those kids were very good listeners and we had no problem at all. They were much like the first class I taught today. The total amount of kids that I taught today is 53! Which then gives me the amount of 106 students that I have taught so far! This reaches my goal! I want to give a Big thank you to Mrs. Gillespie for allowing me to teach all of her P.E. students. She has been a wonderful help to me! She gives the students this little "speech" on how important CPR is and to listen to what I have to say. Mrs. Gillespie you are awesome and thank you so much for allowing me to teach your CPR class and for everything! I would also like to thank the other AHA instructors who have helped me reached my goal and the Spartanburg AHA training center for providing the equipment and materials.

Now since I have reached my goal what to do what to do? I want to offer classes to any other students who were not able to take the class. I also want to be able to teach any of the parents who would be interested in learning basic CPR. I am still planning to teach the Coach's, but Ms. Tewkesburry and I have not set up a date yet due to few coach responses. I think I will ask her if we could add the teachers in as well, I am not sure quiet yet though.

CPR Saturday

This Saturday after church I went and volunteered teaching CPR at the Westgate mall. It was a success! We had over 100 people who took the class. The class was basic CPR and lasted only 30 minutes. At the end of the course each person would receive a free t-shirt! I came around a slow time, but in all it was fun to be able to help out. During the time I was there we had a few people and small groups from different church's as well. Many in packs from church's, because they were hoping to win an AED for their church. The AHA was giving a free AED to the church who had the most church members came out and took the class. Which I think is pretty awesome!  It was very hard to try to bring in the people to take the CPR course. Many of the shoppers were hesitant or were not willing to take the time and learn CPR. No matter, the CPR Saturday was a success and I enjoyed helping. These are some of the photos I took of other CPR instructors teaching.

Life, Love, Hearts, and Chocolates

This coming Valentines day everyone will be handing out  flowers and chocolates to their loved ones. I will be handing out a way that everyone can save the lives of the people they love and care for. I will be teaching two CPR classes to Mrs. Gillespie's second and fourth period class. I was originally supposed to teach the 7th period PE class as well, but I have a doctors appointment. Fourth period will have 23 students! Whew! I have already contacted two extra AHA instructors to help with this big class. Everything is set and ready to go!
This weekend I will be volunteering to teach CPR to community folks at Westgate Mall. I'm so excited! This will be my first time actually being able to teach. I have attended and took the class, but this is much more exciting to be able to teach CPR! Come on out to the mall and I will teach you how to save a life through CPR.

On Off Commission

I am on off commission at the moment. I hope to be back sometime next week! So far I have taught 53 students! I was supposed to teach a CPR class this coming Monday February 7th, but due to medical reason's I have rescheduled it to February 14th. I will be teaching Mrs. Gillespie's PE class. I will be teaching her second, fourth, and seventh period classes. All together there will be 57 students that day. My biggest class will be the fourth period class, which has 23 students. I have already contacted the AHA and two extra volunteer's who will be aiding me. After I have taught this class I will have taught 110 students! My goal was to teach half of the upper school and I have done so! Yay! I will also be teaching the coach's CPR. I have talked with  Ms. Tewkesbury and the CPR class will be taught on a Sunday sometime in February. We do not have a set date yet because not all coach's have replied back yet.
To maintain my CPR certification, I have signed into the AHA instructor network so I will have access to the 2010 AHA guidelines science update. I am also contacting my advisor Lorraine Calwile for an update on my project. Till then.
